Khartal
Traditionally used in devotional and folk songs, the khartal is an ancient musical instrument
Made of two pieces of solid sheesham wood with a thin metal plate running along one edge of each piece, both peices also have metal jingles as you would see on a tambourine
To play this fascinating instrument you hold both pieces in one hand, placing the thumb through the circular “male” hole and the fingers through the wider “female” hole so that the metal plates are together
They can then be simply shaken, or you can tap the two pieces together to create interesting and fun rhythms
